Week 30 – John Paul II on Heaven, Hell and Purgatory

Heaven “is neither an abstraction nor a physical place in the clouds, but a living, personal relationship with the Holy Trinity.” “Rather than a place, hell indicates the state of those who freely and definitively separate themselves from God, the source of all life and joy.” Purgatory “does not indicate a place, but a condition of existence. Those who, after death, exist in a state of purification, are already in the love of Christ who removes from them the remnants of imperfection.”  Blessed Pope John Paul II addressed the concepts of heaven, hell and purgatory in his Wednesday Audiences in July 1999. Week 29 – Homily Pope Francis – Evangelisation

“Dear brothers and sisters, each day the Lord calls us to follow him with courage and fidelity; he has made us the great gift of choosing us as his disciples; he invites us to proclaim him with joy as the Risen one, but he asks us to do so by word and by the witness of our lives, in daily life.”  We should ask “How do I bear witness to Christ through my faith? Do I have the courage of Peter and the other Apostles, to think, to choose and to live as a Christian, obedient to God?” View Article >   Week 29 – Homily Pope Francis – Evangelisation

Week 28 – Faith and Secularism in the Public Square

On March 28, 2012, Cardinal Collins gave a speech to the Canadian Club on the encounter between faith and secularism.  “For a Christian, the secular is the setting within which all of us live during our brief journey through this world.  It is simply the stage, the arena, of daily life.”  But there are three beneficial effects of the active presence of our faith in secular society:  Charity, Diversity and Challenge. Week 27 – The Devotion of the Sacred Heart – by Father John Croiset, SJ

“The heart of man is, says St. Thomas, in a certain manner, both the source and the seat of love….. It is for this reason that we commonly attribute to the heart the most tender sentiments of the soul, and it is also that consideration which renders so precious the hearts of the Saints.”  This site contains excerpts from the original document published in 1691 on behalf of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque. Week 26 – We Can Work it Out – This Rock Magazine

James 2:24 “You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone.”  As Catholics, we accept this as part of our teaching – but what does it mean?  Ephesians 2:10 “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”  Work in Christ.  Work through love.  Work out Salvation. Week 25 – On the Third Day He Rose From the Dead – Catechism of the Catholic Church

“The Resurrection of Jesus is the crowning truth of our faith in Christ, a faith believed and lived as the central truth by the first Christian community; handed on as fundamental by Tradition; established by the documents of the New Testament; and preached as an essential part of the Paschal mystery along with the cross.”  Reading the Catechism of the Catholic Church always strengthens our faith formation.  It is also worth meditating this Sunday on Blessed John Paul II’s 2002 Easter Vigil homily – Blessed John Paul II – Easter Vigil Homily 2002.
